Wreath making craft day Saturday 23rd November 2024
On Saturday 23rd November, a small group came together to create Christmas wreaths in a sustainable way. The enthusiastic group gathered to celebrate creativity, sustainability, and the festive season by making wreaths from natural, locally sourced materials. Five participants joined the workshop with Victoria Smith, a local florist; The Lodge Florist (Victoria runs her own business ) at Houghton Lodge, turning their Saturday into a day of hands-on artistry and meaningful connections.
The materials for the wreaths were as special as the event itself. Volunteers generously donated greenery from their gardens, while the wreath bases were crafted from soaked willow which was hand-bent, creating a charming and rustic unique masterpiece. This eco-friendly approach brought a deeper sense of purpose to the day, reminding us of the beauty from our own gardens.
The craft session buzzed with creativity as everyone dived into their projects. Each wreath was made into a circular design, with different ways to dress the weaved willow. Some went with the traditional full greenery design, whereas others created a mixture of greenery and willow being displayed to show off the beauty of the rustic framework, giving each wreath a personal flair. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed, filled with laughter, the sound of scissors snipping greenery, and the satisfying scent of the willow and greenery that was on offer to use.
Of course, no craft day would be complete without snacks! Guests enjoyed an array of treats, which fueled the creative process and added to the cozy, communal vibe. With cups of tea and plates of nibbles within reach, participants chatted, shared ideas, and swapped tips on the different ways to dress the willow..
By the end of the afternoon, everyone left with a stunning handmade wreath to take home—each one unique, reflecting its creator’s personal style and vision. Beyond the finished products, the event highlighted the joy of crafting, the value of sustainability, and the power of coming together as a community.
As the Christmas holidays approach, this wreath-making day served as a reminder to slow down, get creative, and appreciate the simple pleasures of working with natural materials. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a little inspiration, some greenery, and a group of like-minded people.
Here’s to many more sustainable craft days in the future.
We hope you are able to join us for the next one.
We look forward to seeing you there.
