ANDOVER TREES UNITED

DECEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends,

December is here and we have so much festive fun planned! We have willow ornaments to make as well as our end-of-year party. This is a chance for us all to get together and celebrate all our hard work this year. Please bring a plate – the mulled wine and minced pies are on us! Don’t forget to enter our Christmas draw, where you will have a chance to win some fantastic prizes!

November saw our annual School Tree Planting at Bury Hill. Tree planting is at the core of ATU and this annual tradition is our most important event of the year. As well as School Tree Planting, we also had our Community Tree Planting day at the Diamond Wood. Thank you to everyone who volunteered! We also had our wreath making session with Victoria Smith. With tree planting over, the creation of new nursery beds is underway, to get new trees ready for next year!

Thank you to Sam Wilson for sending in the incredible photograph of a Kestrel featured above!

Finally, GOOD news about our shareable Facebook Page. Renamed Andover Trees, if you are a Facebook user, you can now share our work easily with friends and family again.
We would LOVE to get our following back up, so please follow the page to show your support. Link here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61568477497278

MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS
Amy Ingram
Amy has just finished her Duke of Edinburgh award, and for the volunteering portion, chose to volunteer for ATU.

"I did my volunteering at Andover Trees United, and I worked alongside the management team helping them to run events, get raffle prizes and help make sure that all events and activities were ready to go.
I also joined the management meetings on a Wednesday evening and I also have helped where I can in the progress of the cabin being built.
My thoughts on the volunteering that I've done this year: it has helped me to overcome obstacles that I have found difficult, come out of my comfort zone, listen to people who may have different opinions and be able to understand, grow and develop new skills. It has been a wonderful experience and been an amazing chance to show who I am really to the world.
I would say if anybody was to do volunteering I would definitely go and volunteer for ATU, it's a wonderful organisation and you can get a lot out of it. All I can say is it's been a wonderful experience for my Duke of Edinburgh. It has been an amazing outstanding opportunity and thank you to those who have supported me."

LATEST NEWS
SCHOOL TREE PLANTING AT BURY HILL
In a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental commitment, nearly 1,000 children from 22 local schools participated in this year’s Schools’ Tree Planting Weeks at Bury Hill Meadows. The annual event, organised in partnership with Test Valley Borough Council, saw students, teachers, and volunteers braving all weather to plant 1,500 trees over the course of three weeks.

From November 11 to November 29, children from schools across Andover and nearby villages worked alongside a dedicated team of 140 volunteers from the community and local businesses. The initiative marked its 3rd year with the addition of a new buffer belt of shrubby treesβ€”including hazel, blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose, guelder rose, field maple, and spindleβ€”interspersed with majestic oaks.

A big thank you to all those who volunteered, including those from Vail Williams, Shenton, Coca-Cola, Simply Health, Harrow Way, Andover College, Anton Rotary, CO-OP, SoRecycle and TVBC Countryside Team.

NOVEMBER ROUNDUP
This section includes a roundup of our regular ongoing activities, plus other news as and when. Keep an eye on our website and socials for the latest goings-on.
TREE PLANTNG WITH THE FUSION GROUP
The tree planting season was kicked off today with the wonderful Fusion group. We had a fantastic day; planting Dog Wood, Lime, and Crab Apple; making lovely faces for our friendly trees, and enjoying scrumptious food with friends in the beautiful outdoors. Thank you to Matt, Natalia, Simone, and Beth for all their hard work and friendship
SCHOOL TREE NURSERY BEDS

As tree planting finished, several schools were contacted to see if they would like to either establish - or re-establish nursery beds in their school grounds. These beds would home the saplings that will be planted out in November 2024 at Bury Hill, when the schools begin their annual tree planting adventures with ATU.

Looking after the trees for nearly a whole year, is a wonderful opportunity for the children to see how the trees develop throughout four seasons.

The first group of schools who have taken on this task are; Clatford, C of E, Knights Enham, Smannell and Enham, The Skylark Federation and Portway Juniors. We look forward to seeing how the trees develop throughout the year.

Thank you so much everyone, and if any other schools would like to develop their nurseries please do message me on joanna.oliver-hawkins@andovertrees.org.uk

NATURE NURTURE PROJECT

The Nature Nurture Project is a project designed to help local children and young people to connect with nature. It is funded by the HIWCF Flourishing Communities grant, and will allow groups of young people to design their own project at Harmony Woods.

We also wish to thank TNL https://www.tnlcommunityfund.org.uk/ for generous funding that allows us to employ supporting staff.

VOLUNTEER CONSERVATION DAYS

This week’s Volunteer Conservation Day was back at Harmony Wood and was a wonderful mix of teamwork, dedication, and a love for our shared woodland space. Trevor and the Harrow Way team walked the perimeter fence, looking for breaches where deer might sneak in and to identify weak spots in the poles and wire that need attention.

At the eastern end, the rest of the team focused on the pathways, aiming to make them more accessible for visitors, marking trees that needed trimming to widen the walkways. Thanks to their efforts, walking through the woods will now be a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Annette also prepared willow branches for the Christmas wreath workshop, which we’re thrilled to host for Lloyds Bank employees.

A special highlight of the day was the planting of a cherished Horse Chestnut tree, lovingly nurtured for years by John and Chris. Trevor, Chase, Sonny, and Mr. Allon gave it a new home in the woodland, where it will hopefully thrive and bring joy for generations to come.

We have a volunteer workday every Monday morning throughout the year, except for bank holidays, and the second Saturday of every month. If you would like to join us for practical conservation work looking after the woods and be part of a friendly team, get in touch with doreen.gregori@andovertrees.org.uk

NEWBURY BUILDING SOCIETY VOLUNTEER DAY

Monday 4th November's Volunteer Conservation Day was an inspiring display of teamwork and commitment to protecting our green spaces, made even more special with the energy of volunteers from Newbury Building Society! Working alongside our regular crew, Newbury volunteers pitched in enthusiastically across multiple projects, helping us make fantastic progress on-site.

We kicked off the day with Steve, Izzi and the Newbury team members preparing the ground to the side of the Cabin for grass seeding, ensuring a lush future for this area. Simone, Sam, Jacey, Liang, Annabel, Henry and more volunteers from Newbury sheared the final sections of the Habitats Trail, helping bring it to its final shapeβ€”great work by all!

FOREST SCHOOL'S CLUB
The winter chills are doing nothing to deter our wonderful Home School Forest School group. With a real focus on team building, the young people conquered the plank challenge, mastered an 'Aunt Sally' game, and continued developing their whittling skills while making some yummy chocolate pancakes on the fire pit. Our new shelter is fantasticβ€”thank you so much to everyone who has donated on globalgiving to enable us to purchase it.

FESTIVE WREATH MAKING
On Saturday 23rd November, a small group came together to create Christmas wreaths in a sustainable way. The enthusiastic group gathered to celebrate creativity, sustainability, and the festive season by making wreaths from natural, locally sourced materials. Five participants joined the workshop with Victoria Smith, a local florist turning their Saturday into a day of hands-on artistry and meaningful connections.

Volunteers generously donated greenery from their gardens, while the wreath bases were crafted from soaked willow which was hand-bent, creating a charming and rustic unique masterpiece. This eco-friendly approach brought a deeper sense of purpose to the day, reminding us of the beauty from our own gardens.
