I’ve been exploring ways of bringing out the patterns in the grain using thin washes of paint and earth pigments. I follow what the wood is showing me, and try to relate that to features of the landscape, and in this instance the tree of life imagery. Although as you can see in One Ash 7 the lure of painting moons and seascapes is never far away in my work!
For the narrative of the first group of pieces I’ve been looking into the folklore of ash trees. In Norse mythology Yggdrasil, the tree of life, is an ash tree, and the first man on Earth is called Askr which means ash, he was said to have come from an ash tree.
For the first few pieces shown here on small slices of wood I started by looking at the shapes and patterns that are visible in the wood grain.
I have a number of other ideas for ways I’d like to work with various sizes and shapes of the wood using different techniques and materials to create artwork, watch this space…
