Measuring the branches

The ATU team head into the Englefield Estate to measure the branches that formed the crown of the ash so that they could begin allocating it amongst the artists and crafters. They also collected around 100 ash twigs to make into pencils. 70% of the One Ash tree was removed from the woodland, leaving 30% to rot down into the forest floor.

Transporting the planks

Englefield Estate forestry team help to load up the milled planks and some of the branch pieces into a flatbed truck that we hired for the day. Colin Henwood and Andrew Joye also collected their timber which they have stored at their workshop at the Sylva Foundation in Oxfordshire. The remaining planks were taken to be stored at the Trinley Estate in Andover, and 5 slices of trunk were saved for each of the ATU partner schools taking part in the project.
