Creating a Dragon Garden

  • Harmony Woods Harmony Woods Enham Alamein United Kingdom (map)

Andover Trees United is delighted to announce the creation of a Dragon Garden!

The idea of a Dragon Garden was formed as a memorial to the late Sandy, a dear friend of Andover Trees United members. He was a practising Druid and was fascinated by Dragons. To fit with local legend, Dan Lobb (ATU Trustee, landscape designer and dear friend of Sandy), has based this memorial dragon garden on the Wherwell Cockatrice.

The event will run in three parts:

  • Part One: Digging and Shovelling - Saturday 29th July till Monday 31st July

  • Part Two: Sculpting and Smoothing - Saturday 12th August till Friday 18th August

  • Part Three: Planting and Celebration - Saturday 14th October

We would love to have your help at any stage of the event!

Landscaping help from experienced digger and dump truck drivers needed 29th July - 31st July! Also general spadework!

Help shape the dragon from August 12th till August 18th! Family friendly… the chance to be very ‘hands-on! We’ll also need people to help out with refreshments.

A wildflower planting and celebration to be held on Saturday 14th October. The event will finish the garden by sowing and planting wildflowers on the sculpted mounds and will incorporate storytelling and music as part of the celebration. Those that contributed to ‘Part One and Two’ will be invited back to help with the planting and join the celebrations..

  • The Storyteller will be Amanda Kane-Smith, author of ‘Test Valley Tales’ - which includes stories about the Wherwell Cockatrice as well as the wildflowers of Harmony Woods

  • The music will, we hope, incorporate a specially composed piece about the Cockatrice..

As a thank you to those who contribute to the community-created wood, the completed garden will not be open to the general public, being reserved for the benefit of all who volunteer their time to create and care for the Diamond Wood (including everybody who helped to create the garden), for Sandy’s family and friends, and for schools and groups who book in to run an event or use the ‘people’ facilities.
