Nature Explorers Club February 2024

Following the success of the Nature Explorers activity club held during the school summer holidays last year, four sessions were held this February half term.

Even though the rain did drizzle, the winter sun shone and 30 young explorers arrived in the woods. It was so lovely to see the cabin finally up and running, with the verandah at full use - the fire pit was in action and our compost toilets were once again a popular feature!

Over the two days, our youngest Nature Explorers found themselves on a Bear Hunt, making bug hotels along the way.  The brave explorers battled with the cargo net river and the insects hidden in the swishy grass, before creating wonderful story maps from nature's art store that were found along their journey.

The older explorers were incredibly busy.  Journey sticks and wind chimes were created, whilst admiring the beauty of our skylarks.  This was followed by a tracking adventure into the North Eastern end of the wood, where a mouse or vole was spotted enjoying the remains of last year’s bountiful hazel harvest.

Following some time sitting around the fire pit cooking toast on sticks, our adventurers snuck into the silver birch copse to build hideouts to continue their bird spotting activities.

It was a really lovely couple of days, and we look forward to seeing more Nature Explorers in the Easter holidays.  Please email Nature & Community Officer Jo at joanna.oliver-hawkins@andovertrees.org.uk if you would like information on upcoming sessions.

Nature Explorers is made possible by Global Giving Donations and a National Lottery Reaching Communities grant. We are grateful to all Global Giving donors and to players of National Lottery, without whom the grant would not have been possible.
