'Re-Elming' Harmony Woods #NationalTreeWeek
The UK needs to plant 1.5 billion trees if it is to meet its pledge to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
By ensuring that those trees planted are native British species we can also help to preserve the UK's environment and protect biodiversity. Yet, to make the challenge harder, UK trees are threatened by many diseases such as the current Ash Dieback and Dutch Elm disease which, 40 years ago, eradicated Elm trees from the British Landscape.
However, thanks to a National Tree Council grant, 25 Andover Trees United partner schools are reintroducing this much-loved tree and have planted 25 disease-resistant Elms at Harmony Woods.
They were planted during this year’s Tree Planting Fortnight (18-29th Nov), and each school added a metal label that was handmade by ATU volunteers on to their tree so that they will always be able to come back and find it.
