July's Citizen Science Session

A Bug Hunt Adventure in Harmony Woods

This month’s Citizen Science session was a delightful bug hunt in the enchanting Harmony Woods, and it turned out to be an adventure filled with excitement and discovery!

On the sunny Saturday morning, nature enthusiasts of all ages gathered to explore the diverse ecosystems of Harmony Woods. The session kicked off with a warm welcome and a brief introduction to the fascinating world of insects. Armed with magnifying glasses, field guides, and boundless curiosity, participants set off to uncover the hidden wonders of the woods.

One of the highlights of the day was the pond dipping activity. Equipped with nets and trays, both children and adults eagerly dipped into the serene pond, scooping up water samples teeming with life. The trays quickly filled with wriggling tadpoles, agile water beetles, and delicate dragonfly larvae. Volunteers were on hand to help identify the various creatures, sharing interesting facts about each one and explaining their roles in the ecosystem.

The bug hunt itself was a treasure trove of discoveries. From spotting vibrant butterflies fluttering among the flowers to uncovering camouflaged crickets on blades of grass, every step revealed a new marvel. Participants learned about the importance of insects in pollination, decomposition, and as a food source for other wildlife.

The session concluded with a sharing circle over tea and biscuits, where everyone had the chance to talk about their favorite finds and what they had learned. The joy and enthusiasm were palpable, with many expressing a newfound appreciation for the small but mighty inhabitants of Harmony Woods.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and made this session so special! Your curiosity and eagerness to learn make these events truly magical.

Stay tuned for our next Citizen Science adventure, and in the meantime, keep exploring and appreciating the natural world around you!
