Angus Beaton
My name is Angus, I am a green woodworker.
Green woodworkers use wood from trees that have been recently felled which is soft and can easily be split, cut, worked and shaped using hand tools much more easily than seasoned or dried woods. This means no machinery and no electricity is used so it is a very peaceful workplace and environmentally friendly.
In my outdoor work area using traditional hand tools and a pole-lathe I will be making spoons and cooking utensils, garden tools, shrink pots, and other items. Small items handmade from green wood are often referred to as ‘Treen’.
Often green woodworkers or ‘Bodgers’ make their own tools to work with, and one of the first things is a ‘maul’ which basically is a very simple but large hammer for hitting tools and splitting logs. I made this one from a piece of the Ash tree when I collected my allocated timber from the estate. It weighs 2.5 Kg……….
In my indoor workshop I will use boards cut from the Ash to make a Ledge and Brace door, again this will be made using hand tools and traditionally made nails and dowels.
As I make items I will post photographs of the items and the tools I am using.
